What are we all about ? Put simply, Round Table is all about fun, friends and fund-raising. It's about trying new activities and sports, making new friendships, sharing new and varied experiences, achieving personal goals, enjoying the satisfaction of raising money and helping your community.

It's the perfect opportunity to expand your horizons in more ways than one. But most of all, it's about having a good time.

Who joins Round Table ? Men aged 18 - 45. Our members include both single and family men from all professions and all walks of life. Plus, you do NOT have to live in Guisborough to join ! With many social events and outings, there are many opportunities to involve your partner and family. There are all sorts of sports to try with inter-Table matches adding a real competitive edge.

What do I get out of it ? The potential for a great time, for experiences you might otherwise miss out on completely. After all, Round Table is a leisure activity, a hobby, even a way of life. So the more you put into it, the more you get out of it.

What do I have to do to join ? You have to be a man aged 18 - 45. There are no other joining criteria. All you have to do is enjoy attending the events and joining in whenever you feel like. You have to be like-minded to really get the best out of it. After an initial period as our guest, you will be considered for full membership and asked to pay the annual subscription (currently only £55); this varies depending on the individual Round table. Just send an e-mail to either myself or one of the other members (see members page) and we will e-mail you back with our contact phone number and address, it's really that simple.

Why not come and see what we do ? Joining Round Table could be one of the best moves you make in your life, so why not come and meet some of our members. You may be surprised just how many people have been through Guisborough & District Round Table's doors. Check out our list of previous Chairmen for a start; I bet there is someone there that you know.

As well as being an organization which exists to enjoy ourselves, we also partake in many fund raising activities for charity.

1998/1999 saw the 40th anniversary of Guisborough & District Round Table and the occasion was celebrated during April 2000 with c360 people attending a charity dinner at the Marton Hotel & Country Club and featured Jack Charlton as the celebrity speaker. Through the generosity of those present we managed to raise £5750.00 for the National Kidney Foundation.

From time to time we hold events which raise money for charity and none comes bigger than our biannual musical extravaganza. The last five shows (1995, 1997, 1999, 2001 and 2003) have between them raised in excess of £24,000 for charities, which includes donations (1999) of £2,500 to the National Kidney Foundation, £1,000 to Riding for the Disabled plus (2001) £2,000 to St John Ambulance (Marske & Redcar Division) and £1,600 to North East Lupus and (2003) Macmillan Nurses £2,000, Guisborough Swimming Club £1,500 in addition to many smaller local charities who have benefited over the years such as Stokesley Community Care Centre, Guisborough Cruse, British Red Cross (Guisborough), Save the Children, Guisborough Sea Cadet Corps, 6th Guisborough Guides, 3rd Guisborough Scout Group, Laurence Jackson Youth Club, Guisborough Town Football Club (under 11's), to name but a few.

Through other charity fund raising activities during 2002 and 2003 Guisborough Maternity Hospital and LUPUS have also benefited from 4 figure sums thanks to our efforts (plus Barclays match funding in the case of GMH).

We have completed our Lakes charity walk where we took on the challenge of Scafell Pike, The Old Man of Coniston and Helvelyn all on Saturday 15th May
all aid of raising monies for Z
öes Place, Normanby.

34,379 steps were taken and out of all the guesses, 4 people all guessed the same nearest figure. They were invited along to a prize drawing evening where they drew their own prize in a blind random draw. Prizes went to  Miss W Clark (weekend for 2 at Grinkle Hall, a DVD player and a bottle of champagne), J Wilkinson (Pamper day at Gisborough Hall), Miss T Warwick (DVD player and 14 DVD's) and C McAllister (TV/Video).

Thanks to all those who donated loads of gifts and over £800 which will be going to Zöes Place and other local charities. This followed our usual "Santa's Grotto" at the Guisborough Town Late Night Shopping event. In addition, Peter Brady and all at Coopers Chemist in Marske joined in the fun and collected another £550 on Xmas Eve and they all donned fancy dress! Pictures Here

Guisborough & District Round Table – 2006 Half-Time Report

Well we are half-way through the year and what a busy year it’s been for Guisborough Round Table. So what have we been up to so far this calendar year, and what do we have to look forward to for the second half?

We have been dog racing at Sunderland, climbing at the indoor wall in Newton Aycliffe, danced the night away at the Area dinner dance in Stockton, visited (and tasted) the little brewery at Cropton on a snowy night in March, been out on a Whitby boat trip (on a foggy night), quad biking at Greatham and rafting at the Tees Barrage to name some of the highlights.

As well as having a great time, we occasionally raise money for good causes (last year some £3,500 on the back of our Yorkshire Dales 3-Peaks challenge walk in May 2005). This year we are taking on the Lyke Wake Walk and have been busy seeking sponsorship/donations (you may have seen our stall at Guisborough market on the day of England’s first World Cup match) and getting into shape with various practice walks. The big event takes place on Saturday 15th July and we are raising money for the Great North Air Ambulance and Zöes Place.

So who are we? Round Table is basically all about having a great time, a laugh and doing a bit for the local community (you’ll have seen our Santa in Guisborough and on tour around The Ings, Redcar). There are only about 15 of us, with most living in Guisborough and Redcar/Marske, and we are always looking for new members! For more details and information, check out our web site www.guisborough-round-table.co.uk Our base location is the Fox & Hounds at Slapewath.

Earlier this year, for the first time in our nearly 50 year history, we saw our 2005/2006 Chairman Peter Milburn handing over to his brother Alan to become Chairman for 2006/2007. The handover from one Chairman to the next takes place at an annual dinner and this year’s unique event was attended by Peter & Alan’s father Frank, and Alan’s son Stephen.

So, what have we got coming up in the second half? The BIG walk, cricket against Stokesley Round Table, a trip to the speedway, a sports night and, hopefully, scuba diving, plus Santa and our Xmas party, to name but a few.

Guisborough & District Round Table (and guests) successfully took on the challenge that is the Lyke Wake Walk, on Saturday 15th July 2006. Funds have been raised for Great North Air Ambulance and Zöes Place, children's hospice in Normanby, Middlesbrough.
For more details on the walk itself, please point your browser to
New Lyke Wake Club
All the walkers managed to complete the walk and a massive £4862 has been raised for local charities,
of which, £2,000 has gone to Zöes Place and £2,000 to the Great North Air Ambulance.

Prize winners were:-
Mrs C Buck of Northallerton £100
S Peebles of Guisborough £50
M Waugh of Whitley Bay £25

Guisborough & District Round Table – 2006 end of year news

A busy year is now behind us and we have lots of fund raising news to bring you. Our big charity walk took place on 15th July. 17 walkers started and finished the 42 miles that is the Lyke Wake Walk. This event raised £4,862.94 for charity and I’m delighted to advise you that donations of £2,000 to the Great North Air Ambulance, £2,000 to Zöes Place and £450 to LUPUS were made, with the balance going in smaller donations.

We were pleased to once again provide the Santa for the Guisborough Late Night Shopping event. Yet again, this proved to be hugely popular with c90 children passing through. The following week we took Santa on his travels. Firstly around the top-end of The Ings on 4th December and the following night around Galley Hill, then the “Dales”, Hutton Lane, Dorset Road and ending at a very wet Huntsman car park. As well as bringing joy to children and parents alike, donations collected amounted to c£800 over the two nights!

Funds raised this year again helped us to take the residents of Luke Senior a present each when we called in on Christmas Eve for a spot of carol singing.

On the social side, we paid a visit to the speedway at South Bank to watch Redcar Bears, attended Yarm’s golf driving range, attempted to play cricket against Stokesley Round Table (rained off) and had a Christmas party at the Riverside Stadium.

Coming up – we are going to help Guisborough 41 Club celebrate their 40th anniversary, visit the Climbing Wall in Newton Aycliffe, 10 Pin Bowling and then our annual Chairman’s dinner/dance to name but a few events. Then we’ll be planning our next big fund raising event….

Guisborough & District Round Table – 2007 end of year news

What did we get up to last year?

Well, we have completed the White Rose Walk, 40 miles from the Kilburn White Horse, walking towards home, to Roseberry Topping then Newton-Under-Roseberry on Saturday 7th July 2007.having set off at 4.10am, all the walkers "came home" between 5.20 and 8.15pm.
A superb effort by all, including the back-up support team who kept us all in food and drink. Photos here Half the monies we raise will
go to Zöes Place, with the other half being distributed in smaller donations to other local charitable causes.
We are now delighted to announce that the walk has raised £4,477 for charity,
with £2,500 having already been
handed over to Zöes Place.

November 2007 - Guisborough Round Table help out the Gisborough Priory Project on the first of a series of weekend jobs with a spot of chipping

Our other big charity fund-raiser of 2007 was our annual Santa’s Sleigh. Over 3 nights during the first week of December we took Santa on tour around parts of Guisborough, Redcar and, for the first time, Marske, bringing much joy to children and parents alike! Donations collected, which are for charitable causes, were a combined £824. Many thanks to all of you that supported us.

As you will have seen, ‘Tabling’ is all about having fun and doing a little bit occasionally for the local community.

On the social side, we have been back to the Speedway at South Bank to see the Redcar Bears in action (and win), we have played Basketball, attended a Comedy Night in Northallerton, taken on Guisborough 41 Club at a quiz night, been Scuba Diving in the pool at the Saltburn Leisure Centre and played Badminton in Loftus, 10-Pin Bowling and had the odd beer or two along the way. We also had our own Christmas party, held at Grinkle Park Hotel, joined of course by our wives/partners.

Coming up – we are going to be braving the cold at Guisborough Market on Saturday 16th February so why not come along and meet some of us, and find out a little more of what Round Table has to offer and how you can join. We have always got lots to look forward to, and you might be just in time for our annual Chairman’s dinner/dance at Hunley Hall which comes up at the end of March!

GUISBOROUGH & DISTRICT ROUND TABLE, 50th Anniversary, 1959 – 2009

The first Round Table was formed in Norwich in 1927. The founder, Louis Marchesi, was a young Rotarian who felt a need existed for a club where the young business men of the town could gather on a regular basis to exchange ideas, learn from the experiences of their colleagues and play a collective part in the civic life of Norwich. Within a year membership of this Round Table had grown to 85 and interest had been shown in establishing Round Tables elsewhere.

Round Table owes nothing to Arthurian Legend, deriving both its title and its maxim from a speech made to the British Industries Fair in 1927 by the then Prince of Wales - "The young business and professional men of this country must get together round the table, ADOPT methods that have proved so sound in the past, ADAPT them to the changing needs of the times and wherever possible, IMPROVE them". The design of the Round Table emblem is, however, an adaptation of the table which hangs in the great hall, Winchester and which is claimed to be the Round Table of the court of King Arthur.

In 1958 a group of local men met up to try and establish a Round Table in Guisborough and on 4th February 1959 Guisborough & District Round Table was officially chartered. Over time the membership was heavily weighted with employees of ICI Wilton and British Steel.

As well as being an outlet for fun and fellowship, Guisborough RT have been greatly involved with the local community and raising monies for local charities and other worthy causes.   Various events have been run over the years such as the Guisborough Fun Run, Christmas Eve carol singing at Luke Senior and the Guisborough Round Table Stage Society shows which ran every other year until the last one in 2003. These shows raised in excess of £45,000 (the last 5 alone raised over £24,000). In the last 5 years we have still been active in raising funds and have been undertaking other equally challenging activities such as a Lake District 3-peaks challenge in 2004, the Yorkshire Dales 3-Peaks challenge in 2005, the Lyke Wake Walk in 2006, the White Rose Walk in 2007 and a 24-hour Go-Karting challenge in 2008; all these events have raised thousands of pounds. In recent years we have also taken Santa out on his sleigh to parts of Guisborough, Marske and Redcar, where we bring great joy to the faces of children and adults alike, and raise funds along the journey.

Over the years we have celebrated various milestones such as the 25th Charter, 30th Charter, the 1000th meeting (on 26th September 1997). The 40th Charter was celebrated in grand style with c360 people attending a charity dinner at the Marton Hotel & Country Club where the guest speaker was Jack Charlton. This event alone raised £5,750 which was donated to the National Kidney Foundation. This year we celebrate the 50th anniversary of our Charter by way of a dinner at Gisborough Hall, Guisborough on 24th April.

It is not all about the charity side, far from it. In our twice monthly meetings we are regularly out enjoying ourselves. Whether it be a boat trip, 10-pin bowling, quad-biking, walking, clay-pigeon shooting, attending the speedway, a beer festival, playing cricket, quoits, badminton, basketball, 5-aside football, or out eating and drinking, it’s all about having a good time! Last September a group of us attended the Association’s National Sporting Weekend (an annual get together of Tables from all over Great Britain) as part of our Area Team, taking part in various sporting events based, this time, at the campus of Nottingham University. The day’s sporting activities were rounded off by a formal dinner and entertainment through to the small hours. We also have other events where our wives and families can come along, such as a dinner dance, Christmas party, summer barbeque and parties.

Whilst Tabling, and life, has changed greatly since 1959, Round Table remains all about having fun, making friends and, occasionally, doing a little bit of fund raising for charity.

Round Table has used the motto of ‘Adopt, Adapt and Improve’ to make it an organisation which is still relevant in the 21st century.

Membership is open to men between the ages of 18 and 45 years irrespective of their religious beliefs or political opinions and, the only other restriction placed on the potential member is that he should either work or reside in the catchment area of the Table. Round Table is a participating organization and the old saying applies strongly to Round Table "You get out what you put in". You can develop yourself whilst having fun along the way.

Paul Bostock, February 2009

Guisborough & District Round Table has celebrated its 50th anniversary with a

We were at the Guisborough Town Fair at Gisborough Hall on Sunday 7th June 2009 and also attended the Leonard Cheshire Disability Fete at the home in Marske by the Sea, on Saturday 13th June 2009, where we had a coconut stall.

On Saturday 27th June 2009 we took on the "Everest" challenge...via Roseberry Topping. We ascended RT 41 times (on a relay basis), from the car park at Newton-Under-Roseberry, which is the equivalent height of climbing Everest from sea level.
This charity challenge took place to raise funds for (mainly) Great North Air Ambulance and the Diabetes unit at James Cook Hospital - plus local charities and good causes.
£5,923 has been raised and we have now agreed donations of £2,000 to Great North Air Ambulance, £2,000 to James Cook Hospital Diabetes Unit (Diabetes Education Fund), £1,000 to Zoë's Place and £1,000 to RNLI (Redcar).
